Fireplace Media - What Should I Choose?

Fireplace media can vary as much as the different types of fireplaces. So, when it comes to finding the right media for you and your fireplace, there are two main questions: What is it listed for, and what do you want to have in there? Let's talk about the options.

Different Fireplace Media Types

  • None: This might not seem like an option, but it must be said – not all fireplaces take "media." For example, wood fireplaces use chopped firewood and don't accept gas logs or glass media. Some gas and electric fireplaces opt out of media to emphasize the flame as the focal point. If that appeals to you, some fireplaces meet that requirement.

  • Logs: Typically, "logs" refers to gas logs – logs that go in a gas fireplace to emulate the appearance and aesthetics of a traditional wood-burning fire. Gas logs can be made of ceramic fiber or refractory cement. Some gas logs are specific to their fireplaces, while others can be changed. This information will be covered in the fireplace owner's manual.

  • Glass: Fire glass is a specific glass medium designed for a fireplace. Importantly, not just any glass can go into your fireplace. Specially treated, tempered glass is used to create glass media in various forms. There are glass chunks, beads, crystals, and so on. All forms of glass media come in a rainbow of colors, so you'll find it no matter what look you're going for. We have a Fire Glass Buyer's Guide for more detailed information.

  • Artistic Media: There are additional media options if you want something a little different from logs or glass. Metal sculptures, cannon balls, and rock media are all popular options. It should be noted that all additional media used in your fireplace should be designed and only used for applicable fireplaces.

The media you choose for your fireplace brings it together. But there are a few other things to learn about fireplaces before you select which one to have in your home. Click here to move to the next article.
